Keeping a running dialog with myself - in a fit of hilarity, I decided to SSH into the vCSA, create a 'bogus' user, and assign it Administrator privileges as root. Cycled the login and - it worked?! So root, which had no access, could apparently create a user that does have access. And I tried updating root's perms as bogus and cycling the login to root, and root is still locked out. Unless there's some rule I missed about not logging into vCSA as root, I'm completely baffled here. And that did work anyway, very recently.
